Trip Report 2 June - La Paz to Roadblock, Bolivia (enroute to Uynuy)

We set out for Uynuy with no real intention of getting there.  We slogged through some ugly towns on boring roads and realized that there may be a chance to make it afterall.  We were heading south on the Altaplano towards Chile but the objective was the salt flats.  At a town that put us within striking distance of 200km to Uynuy we gassed up after being invited to cut in front of a cue of about 12 cars.  I think one gas station in a town with 2 was out and this was the only option.

The road changed from boring pavement to well prepared motocross track and I just started having a ball.  It was getting late and it gets dark quickly here. At least 30 minutes before sunset we ran into trouble. Road closed to Uynuy, blocked by villagers in a town with 2 hostals.  Not much to choose from but ugly and horrible.  We chose ugly.  When I say not much to choose from, I mean a hostal without shower facilities, not even shared shower facilities.  We are not in Kansas anymore.  Oh...did I mention...no hot water?  Go outside and dip from a pail to wash up.  Bring your own towel.  A good time to break out the sleeping bag liner.

We discuss strategies to get by the road block but defer decision making until the town poobahs have their big evening meet.  Too tired to worry about it.
